“What’s that? The time has come to spring clean my bathroom? Hurray!” Said no one. Ever.  Let’s be honest, scrubbing down the bathroom is probably a task most people approach with reluctance if not a sense of outright dread. The mere thought of getting down on hands and knees to scour tiles and polish hardware can be exhausting. But the task doesn’t have to be an ordeal. Here are some helpful hacks for your bathroom spring cleaning that will make the process efficient, effective, and manageable.

Create a Cleaning Plan

Before diving into the cleaning process, it’s essential to have a plan in place. Start by making a checklist of all the jobs you need to accomplish, such as cleaning the toilet, scrubbing the tiles, decluttering cabinets, and organizing toiletries. Having a clear roadmap will help you stay focused and ensure that no area is overlooked. It will also give you a sense of accomplishment and progress being made as you check off each task.

Declutter and Organize

It will come as a surprise to absolutely no one that clutter tends to accumulate in bathrooms, making it challenging to maintain cleanliness. Take this opportunity to declutter your bathroom by getting rid of expired products, empty containers, and items you no longer use. All those slivers of soap? Gone! Those shampoo bottles with four drops of shampoo left? Outta here! Sort through your cosmetics, skincare products, and medications as well, and discard anything past its expiration date. Organize the remaining items in storage bins, drawer dividers, or hanging organizers, making them easily accessible.

Deep Clean the Shower and Bathtub

The shower and bathtub are often the most used and hardest-to-clean areas in a bathroom. To remove soap scum and mineral deposits, create a natural cleaning solution by mixing equal parts white vinegar and dish soap. Apply this mixture to the surfaces, let it sit for a few minutes, and scrub with a non-abrasive brush or sponge. For stubborn stains, sprinkle baking soda and scrub gently. Rinse thoroughly with water for a sparkling clean finish.

Tackle the Toilet

Toilets can harbor bacteria and unpleasant odors if not cleaned regularly. Start by applying a toilet bowl cleaner and allowing it to sit for a few minutes. Use a toilet brush to scrub the bowl thoroughly, paying attention to the rim and under the seat. Don’t forget to clean the exterior surfaces, including the base and the handle, with an all-purpose cleaner. Finish off by wiping the toilet seat and surrounding areas with disinfectant wipes.

Want to go further? If your toilet seat is more than 10 years old, why not replace it? This is actually a very easy upgrade. Seats are attached using two large bolts and can be swapped out in less than five minutes!

Shine the Sink and Faucets

A shiny sink and faucets can instantly elevate the appearance of your bathroom. Begin by clearing any debris or residue from the sink. Use a non-abrasive cleaner or a mixture of baking soda and water to scrub the surface. Pay special attention to the edges and the drain. For faucets, dip a cloth in vinegar and wrap it around the fixture, leaving it for a few minutes to dissolve mineral deposits. Scrub gently and rinse thoroughly for a sparkling finish.

Freshen Up the Grout and Tiles

Over time, grout between tiles can become discolored and dirty. To freshen it up, create a paste using baking soda and water. Apply this mixture to the grout lines and scrub with a toothbrush or grout brush. For stubborn stains, you can add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. Once clean, rinse with water and wipe dry. For tiles, use a mild tile cleaner or a mixture of vinegar and water, and wipe them down with a microfiber cloth.

Focus on Ventilation

Proper ventilation is essential in preventing mold and mildew growth in the bathroom. Check your exhaust fan to ensure it is functioning correctly. Remove the cover and clean any accumulated dust or debris. If needed, replace the filter or consider installing a new exhaust fan if it’s not effectively removing moisture. Opening windows during and after showers can also aid in proper ventilation.
